Martin Doe and Gerald Nowell have had local roads named after them in recognition of their work on the reserve over many years. Both roads are off the west side of Colchester Avenue.

Martin Doe
~
Martin has been involved with the reserve since 1973 when he was still a schoolboy in Howardian High School and a member of the schools Natural History Society. In 2004 Doe Close (on Colchester Avenue near the Three Brewers Public House) was named in his honour as he had been closely involved in the reserve for over thirty years. Martin has been instrumental in the change from Rye Grass desert to the rich and varied habitats of today which support a wide variety of flora and fauna

Gerald Nowell
~
Ffordd Nowell (on Colchester Avenue behind Sainbury's) has been named after Gerald (Ger) Nowell who has been involved in the reserve since 1986 being responsible for much of the overall planning and planting. On 27th September 2009 councillors Freda Salway and Bill Kelloway made a formal presentation to Gerry in the presence of family, friends and members of Friend's of Howardian LNR.
