Saint Margaret's Church
Waterloo Road, Roath, Cardiff

The third Marquess of Bute built St Margaret's Church on the site of an earlier Norman chapel.

Building ~

Saint Margaret's Church (Official Website)dedicated to Saint Margaret of Anitoch was built in 1870 by the Third Marquess of Bute in the Gothic Revival Style on the site of an earlier Norman chapel. It was designed by Llandaff architect John Prichard on a Greek Cross plan. It is next to Waterloo Gardens a formal park laid out in the Edwardian style.

Interior
~
Saint Margaret's Parish Church was where the Bute family worshipped. Inside is an opulent mausoleum. The family crypt, modelled on the Tzar of Russia's family crypt, is made from pink granite. It houses tombs of nine members of the Bute family, including the First Marquess and his wives. Saint Margaret's Church is a Grade 1 listed building and takes part in the CADW supported European Heritage Weekend.

Altar ~

The church is beautifully decorated reflecting the wealth of the Bute family. Above the altar the reredos shows Christ and the Twelve Apostles designed by Ninian Comper. Each Apostle is depicted with the instruments of their martyrdom.
