Howardian Local Nature Reserve Juvenile Dormouse Sixth Year of Monitoring

This sixth year of monitoring has seen an increase in numbers from an all time low of 25 last season to a healthy 54. After drops from 105 in 2011 to 42 in 2012 and 25 in 2013 the population has bounced back with 54 being found during 2014. The 2012 season was preceded by a mild winter followed by a wet spring with extensive flooding before the 2013 season which would seem to explain the downward curve in the population which now seems to be in recovery.

Howardian Local Nature Reserve Dormouse Box taken over by Slugs and Woodlice Box Surveys

Eight surveys were undertaken, Aprit to November and as usual data was registered with The County Ecologist, SeWBREC, NRW and NDMP. Early in the season Tits had nested in 34, 65% of boxes, this year there were Slugs in many boxes and in September two boxes contained 5 Woodmice each. Our heaviest Dormouse, in October, was 29gms (a good hibernation weight) and the lightest, September, 9gms.
